Research may cover areas such as STEM, experimental medicine, humanities, social sciences, public health, and clinical or allied health sciences, provided it falls within Wellcome's Discovery Research remit.

- Additional eligible costs outside the expense limit, including overheads, overseas allowances, macaques purchased from the Centre for Macaques, and adjustment support.

Eligibility
- Open to early-career researchers who have passed their PhD or equivalent higher research degree viva by the application submission date, or researchers with at least four years of equivalent research experience without a PhD.
- Applicants should generally have no more than three years of postdoctoral experience at the time of submission, with allowances made for career breaks, part-time work, and parental leave.
- Successful candidates must commit at least 80% of their research time to the project.
- Administering organisations must be non-profit and based in eligible regions (subject to a location eligibility update effective 29 October 2026).
