Overview
The University of Oslo (UiO) in Norway offers one to two full-time PhD Research Fellowships in Human Geography through its Department of Sociology and Human Geography. Successful candidates will undertake independent doctoral research under academic supervision, join the Faculty of Social Sciences’ PhD programme, and work toward a doctorate in human geography.
Fellowships are available under two structures:
- Three-year fellowship: Focused entirely on doctoral research without compulsory work responsibilities.
- Four-year fellowship: Includes 25% compulsory work, primarily involving teaching and related academic responsibilities.
The position offers a competitive annual salary ranging from NOK 551,000 to NOK 594,000, along with employee benefits including membership in the State Pension Fund and access to workplace exercise arrangements.
Eligibility
- Master's Degree: Must hold a master's degree in human geography or an equivalent qualification providing adequate preparation for PhD-level research.
- Higher Education Duration: Must have prior education equivalent to five years of university-level study in Norway, including two years at the master's level (120 ECTS credits).
- Academic Grades: Expected to have a strong master's grade average of A or B.
- English Proficiency: Required for applicants who completed education outside the EU/EEA area without an English-language master's degree, demonstrated via accepted tests such as TOEFL (550 PBT / 80 iBT) or IELTS (6.0).
