The United Nations Environment Programme invites eligible community-based organizations in East Africa to apply for grants of up to USD 30,000 for ecosystem-based adaptation projects. Selected organizations also receive technical assistance, capacity development, and implementation training.

Overview

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has opened the first Call for Proposals under the Mountains ADAPT Small Grants Project for 2026. This initiative aims to empower local organizations to implement ecosystem-based adaptation initiatives that protect natural resources, improve community livelihoods, and strengthen climate resilience in mountain regions across the East African Community (EAC).

Selected organizations may receive up to USD 30,000 in funding. Additionally, successful applicants will receive technical guidance, capacity development, project implementation training, institutional strengthening, and monitoring and evaluation support. UNEP plans to support up to 15 community-led projects during this funding round.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants must be registered community organizations operating within mountain regions of eligible East African Community countries. Individuals are not eligible to apply.

  • Community-based organizations
  • Grassroots organizations
  • Civil society organizations
  • Youth organizations
  • Women-led organizations
  • Registered NGOs

Eligible countries include Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

How to Apply

Interested organizations must complete the official online application form and upload all required supporting documents before the deadline. Accepted application languages include English, French, and Kiswahili.

Required application documents include:

  • Official registration certificate
  • National ID or passport of the legal representative
  • Evidence of previous project experience

Deadline

Applications must be submitted no later than 15 September 2026 at 11:59 PM East African Time (EAT).
