Overview
The University of Michigan African Studies Center (ASC) hosts the UMAPS Fellowship, a residential research program designed to give early-career African faculty a five-month residency in the United States. Fellows advance their independent research, collaborate with a University of Michigan faculty mentor, and participate in scholarly seminars, workshops, and interdisciplinary networking events. The program accepts applicants across diverse academic fields including humanities, social sciences, STEM, public health, education, and agriculture. For the 2027 cycle, scholars teaching in Egypt are also included through a partnership with CMENAS.

Eligibility
- Must be a current early-career faculty member at an African college or university.
- Must have fewer than ten years of teaching experience in higher education.
- Must be capable of residing in Ann Arbor, Michigan for the full duration of the five-month fellowship.
- Must secure strong institutional support and an endorsement from the home university (department head, dean, or vice chancellor).
- Must demonstrate a commitment to collaborative research and academic engagement.

- A scholarly research proposal of no more than five pages.
