The South African Master in Ocean Sciences (AOS-SAMOS) is an innovative postgraduate programme designed to strengthen Ocean Sciences education and research capacity in South Africa.

Overview
The South African Master in Ocean Sciences (AOS-SAMOS) is a fully interdisciplinary postgraduate initiative created to support the sustainable development of South Africa's Blue Economy. Bringing together nine South African universities, national research institutions, and European academic partners, the programme combines marine biology, oceanography, quantitative analysis, digital technologies, social sciences, law, and sustainability.
The 180-credit full-time Master’s degree consists of 90 credits of coursework and a 90-credit minor dissertation. Coursework begins in February 2027 and is delivered in person at the Nelson Mandela University Ocean Sciences Campus in Gqeberha. Depending on funding and study pathways, the duration spans between one and two years.
Eligibility
- Holds a four-year Bachelor’s degree with a research project, an Honours degree, or another equivalent NQF Level 8 qualification with a 30-credit research component.
- Demonstrates disciplinary alignment with the AOS-SAMOS curriculum.
- Achieved an average of at least 65% in science subjects or above 70% in other pertinent subjects.
- Proficiency in English, supported by qualifications such as the National Senior Certificate, IELTS, TOEFL, or the National Benchmark Test Academic Literacy.

How to Apply
Applications for the 2027 cohort are managed through a single-entry point at the University of Cape Town. Candidates must submit a two-page curriculum vitae, proof of highest qualification, complete academic transcripts, a detailed motivation letter, and additional supporting documents where applicable. Applicants should select their preferred study stream and submit all materials prior to the closing date.
