Overview
The Shanghai Government Scholarship (SGS) is a funding initiative established by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government to attract outstanding international students and promote educational exchange. Operating since 2006, the programme supports international candidates pursuing undergraduate, master's, PhD, and pre-college programmes at participating institutions across Shanghai.
Benefits
The scholarship is divided into two main categories offering different levels of financial support:
- Type A (Full Scholarship): Covers tuition, accommodation and living expenses, and medical insurance. It includes monthly living allowances of CNY 3,500 for doctoral students, CNY 3,000 for master’s students, and CNY 2,500 for undergraduate students.
- Type B (Partial Scholarship): Covers tuition fees and medical insurance throughout the designated study duration.
Additionally, participating universities generally provide accommodation for scholarship recipients during their first year of study and assist with visa applications and registration procedures.
Eligibility
Candidates must meet the following criteria to qualify for the scholarship:
- Must be non-Chinese citizens in good health with strong academic performance.
- Age and educational prerequisites: Undergraduate applicants must hold a high school degree and be under 25 years old; Master’s applicants must hold a bachelor's degree and be under 35 years old; PhD applicants must hold a master's degree with research capability and be under 40 years old. Pre-college applicants must hold a high school degree, be under 23 years old, and possess an undergraduate pre-admission letter from a Shanghai university.
- Generally require a Chinese language proficiency of HSK4 alongside meeting specific institutional and programmatic language requirements.
- Cannot hold any other scholarships offered by the Chinese government or external organizations concurrently.
