The Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholar Awards are designed to support emerging reporters aiming to build careers in international journalism. In a typical year, the Foundation grants approximately 18 awards consisting of $3,000 scholarships for independent academic or journalistic work or $4,000 fellowships funding bureau placements at leading news organizations such as Reuters, the Associated Press, and Bloomberg. Winners are also invited to a training, networking, and awards reception event in New York City.
Eligibility
- Open to college juniors, college seniors, and graduate students enrolled in a degree program at the application deadline.
- Applicants must satisfy one of two specified pathways: international students studying at a U.S. college or university, or U.S. citizens studying abroad.
- Candidates do not need prior international travel experience, provided their reporting meaningfully engages with international communities or global issues.
How to Apply
Applicants must combine all required materials into a single .docx or .pdf document not exceeding 10 MB, formatted with the file naming convention Last name_First name. The complete submission must be in English (with English translations provided for original work in other languages) and include:
- A one-page autobiographical cover letter detailing journalistic development and career goals.
- A one-page resume focusing on journalism experience, language skills, media skills, and visa or passport status.
- A journalism work sample chosen from print (600–800 words), photojournalism (images plus a ~500-word context statement), video journalism (2–7 minutes plus context), or audio journalism (2–7 minutes plus context).
Submissions must be uploaded directly through the official Foundation web portal.
