NATO Defense College Fellowship 2027 in Italy | Fully Funded
The NATO Defense College Fellowship offers funded resident research opportunities in Rome for junior and senior scholars from Allied and partner countries. Applications are open until 30 September 2026.

Overview
The NATO Defense College (NDC) Research Division provides fully funded resident research fellowships in Rome, Italy, designed for junior and senior scholars as well as nationals of Allied and NATO partner countries. The programme allows researchers to investigate NATO-related challenges, produce policy-relevant studies, participate in networking events, and gain insight into decision-making processes.
Successful applicants can complete the five-month fellowship during one of two available periods: Period 1 runs from 15 February 2027 to 16 July 2027, or Period 2 from 26 August 2027 to 28 January 2028. Eisenhower PhD candidates may also apply for both terms to complete a total of ten months.
Benefits
- Senior Eisenhower, PfP, PatG, and ICI Fellows: €18,000 stipend.
- Eisenhower Defense Fellow: €14,000 stipend.
- Eisenhower PhD Candidate Fellow: €11,000 stipend.
Stipends are intended to cover living expenses in Rome, travel costs, and related fees. Payments are disbursed in three installments depending on the specific award tier, with milestones tied to arrival, duration, and the submission of a research draft and presentation.
Eligibility
- Eisenhower Fellowships: Reserved for researchers and nationals of NATO Allied countries. Requirements include holding a relevant PhD with post-doctoral professional experience, a publication record, or status as an advanced PhD student working on a NATO-relevant thesis topic.
- PfP, PatG, and ICI Fellowships: Open to qualified scholars, academics, and researchers originating from Partnership for Peace countries, Partners across the Globe countries, and Istanbul Cooperation Initiative countries respectively.
