Overview
The NATO International Staff is inviting qualified legal professionals to apply for Assistant Legal Adviser positions within the Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. The recruitment seeks to fill two positions, including an Assistant Legal Adviser at grade G17 and a twin-graded Assistant Legal Adviser position at grade G15/G17. Successful candidates will provide legal advice, support policy development, negotiate and draft agreements, assist with litigation, and handle other legal matters affecting the organization, its personnel, committees, operations, and member nations.
The role combines legal expertise with policy analysis, institutional coordination, and practical problem-solving. Responsibilities span public international law, privileges and immunities, jus ad bellum, jus in bello, international administrative law, and employment-related legal matters. Appointments are initially offered as a three-year definite-duration contract with the possibility of renewal for up to another three years.
Eligibility
- Nationality: Must be a national of a NATO member country.
- Education: A university degree in law from an institution of recognized standing, together with appropriate professional legal qualifications.
- Experience: At least five years of experience providing legal advice in public international law and/or international administrative law.
- Languages: Proficiency in NATO's two official languages, requiring Level V (Advanced) in either English or French, and Level II (Elementary) in the other.
- Additional Competencies: Strong analytical, conceptual, and communication skills, resilience under pressure, and a collaborative approach. Expertise in defence and security law or government/international organization experience is an advantage.
