National Endowment for Democracy Grants 2026: Funding for NGOs, Civil Society and Independent Media Worldwide
The National Endowment for Democracy Grants Program accepts proposals from independent nongovernmental organizations working to advance democratic values, protect human rights, and support independent media worldwide.

Overview
The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) Grants Program is designed to support independent nongovernmental organizations that work to advance democratic values, strengthen institutions, protect human rights, promote civic participation, and improve accountability around the globe. Each year, the program funds more than 2,000 projects across over 100 countries, with a particular focus on challenging political environments such as emerging democracies, political transitions, semi-authoritarian settings, and highly restrictive societies.
NED's general grants do not publish a standard minimum or maximum funding amount. Instead, applicants are expected to design a realistic budget that corresponds directly to their proposed activities. The initiative covers ten primary areas of interest, including human rights and the rule of law, freedom of information, democratic values, transparency, civil society strengthening, democratic processes, civic education, conflict resolution, freedom of association, and broad-based market economies.
Eligibility
The program supports independent nongovernmental entities engaged in nonpartisan activities consistent with NED's objectives. Qualifying applicants include:
- Civil society organizations
- Civic organizations
- Associations
- Independent media organizations
- Other similar nongovernmental entities
Organizations operating in difficult political conditions where civic space or freedom of expression is limited are expressly welcomed. However, certain applicants are strictly excluded from the general grants program, including:
- Individuals
- Government bodies
- State institutions
- State-supported institutions, such as public universities
Registered organizations must provide a Certificate of Registration or equivalent legal status document. Unregistered organizations may still apply by providing a clear explanation of their status in their transmittal email.
How to Apply
Applicants must submit a completed proposal package consisting of an Organizational Profile Form, an Application Proposal Form, a detailed Proposal Narrative, a project budget, and registration documents where applicable.
