Overview
The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan – Standard Program provides international early-career researchers an opportunity to spend 12 to 24 months conducting collaborative research at universities and approved research institutions in Japan. Open across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, the fellowship requires successful applicants to work alongside an eligible Japanese host researcher on a concrete collaborative project.

Eligibility
- Must be a citizen of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan (researchers from Taiwan and Palestine are also eligible).
- Must have obtained a doctoral degree within six years of the fellowship start date, or expect to receive a PhD before the fellowship begins.
- Japanese citizens and permanent residents of Japan are ineligible for the Standard Program overseas pathway.
- Applicants must not have previously started a fellowship under the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan – Standard Pathway to University Positions in Japan.
How to Apply
Applicants cannot apply independently; the process requires partnering with an eligible host researcher in Japan. Open-call applications must be submitted through the Japanese host institution using the JSPS Electronic Application System. Alternatively, candidates may apply through approved overseas nominating authorities where available.
Deadline
The second-round application deadline from the host institution to JSPS is 23 April 2027 at 5:00 PM Japan Standard Time (JST). Universities often establish internal deadlines significantly earlier than the official JSPS date.
