The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, established by the Research Grants Council, aims to draw exceptional global minds to pursue doctoral studies at leading institutions in Hong Kong. The programme supports 400 top-performing students across multiple fields, including sciences, medicine, engineering, humanities, social sciences, and business studies.
Benefits
- Annual stipend of HK$344,400 (approximately US$44,150) for up to three years.
- Annual travel allowance of HK$14,400 (approximately US$1,840) for research-related relocation and conferences.
- Additional university support for extended research periods beyond three years.
Eligibility
- Open to applicants of any nationality who plan to enroll as new full-time PhD students.
- Must satisfy English language requirements through prior instruction or an accepted proficiency certificate.
- Must apply to one or more of the eight participating Hong Kong universities.
How to Apply
Candidates must submit an initial application using the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme Electronic System (HKPFSES) to obtain a reference number. Afterwards, applicants must apply separately to up to two participating universities and provide their assigned HKPFSES reference number in the university admission forms.

The application deadline for the initial fellowship submission is 1 December 2026 at 11:59 pm Hong Kong Time.
