Overview

The Global Invisible Fellowship supports research and teaching within Central European University's Global Invisible University initiative. Hosted by the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS CEU), the program offers residential and non-residential fellowships for scholars specializing in the social sciences and humanities for the 2027/28 academic year. Selected fellows participate in weekly seminars, thematic discussions, and collaborative networks across CEU's Vienna and Budapest locations.

Benefits

  • Senior Fellows: Receive a net monthly stipend of 2,600 Euros.
  • Junior Fellows: Receive a net monthly stipend of 1,500 Euros.
  • Housing: Accommodation at the Raoul Wallenberg Guesthouse is provided for fellows and their families (utilities are charged to the fellows).
  • Facilities: Access to CEU library resources, computer services, and conference or seminar spaces.
  • Threatened Scholars (Non-Residential): Receive a net monthly stipend of 1,000 Euros alongside allowances designated for travel and short-term stays at CEU.
  • Residential Affiliated Fellows: Do not receive a stipend, and housing is provided conditionally by the Institute.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent qualification in the social sciences or humanities upon application.
  • Candidates must have publications featured in internationally recognized scholarly outlets.
  • Junior Fellowship: Requires a Ph.D. degree issued in 2018 or later.
  • Senior Fellowship: Requires a Ph.D. obtained prior to 2018.
  • Full-time CEU employees and students are ineligible for 5 years following the end of their studies or contract (must have ended by December 31, 2021 or earlier).
  • Part-time or temporary CEU employees are ineligible for 1 year after their contract ends (must have ended by December 31, 2025 or earlier).
  • Scholars currently connected to any CEU academic or research units, as well as former IAS CEU fellows within a 7-year restriction window, cannot apply.
  • Applicants must possess fluent English communication skills.

How to Apply

Interested candidates must combine all required documentation into a single PDF file not exceeding 12 MB in size, naming the file with their full name and fellowship type. The application package requires:

  • A letter of intent (maximum 1,500 words), incorporating a paragraph on academic freedom and contributions to GIU.
  • An abstract of the research project (maximum 150 words).
  • A complete research project description (between 1,000 and 2,500 words).
  • A teaching statement detailing experience and teaching philosophy (maximum 1 page).
  • A curriculum vitae (maximum 5 pages).
  • A list of key publications (up to 5 items for junior applicants; up to 15 items for senior applicants).
  • Contact names and email addresses of two referees (required for junior applicants only).
  • Threatened Scholars must supply a personal statement of risk or supporting third-party documentation.
