Overview
The University of Iceland invites applications for a full-time doctoral research position centered on water governance in low-income African countries. The three-year initiative investigates how rural water-governance systems can achieve greater sustainability, efficiency, and equity, with particular attention given to Uganda, Malawi, and Sierra Leone. Selected candidates join the interdisciplinary Environment and Natural Resources doctoral programme and work alongside specialists in resource management, development studies, economics, social sciences, and water governance.
The position is funded by the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs through the University of Iceland PhD Grants Fund, merging academic inquiry with policy evaluation and field-based data collection. The anticipated start date is 1 November 2026 or by mutual agreement.
Eligibility
- Applicants must hold a relevant master's degree in a related discipline (such as environmental studies, natural-resource studies, social sciences, development studies, public policy, or human geography) by the start date.
- Demonstrate strong academic writing skills and proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Possess the ability to conduct independent research, work within an interdisciplinary team, and engage with external stakeholders.
- Secure formal admission to the University's Environment and Natural Resources doctoral programme independently of the employment offer.
