Disaster Risk Reduction Training – UNITAR Women’s Leadership Programme for World Tsunami Awareness Day 2026
The UNITAR Women’s Leadership in Disaster Risk Reduction Training Programme aims to equip 500 participants with lifelong skills in disaster preparedness and inclusive leadership. Fully funded by the Government of Japan, the initiative features a flexible online learning phase followed by specialized workshops for top performers.

Overview
The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Women’s Leadership in Disaster Risk Reduction Training Programme for World Tsunami Awareness Day 2026 is designed to center women’s voices, experiences, and leadership in disaster preparedness. Funded by the Government and People of Japan, the initiative aims to train approximately 500 participants in inclusive disaster risk reduction and community resilience strategies, drawing heavily on Japan's disaster management expertise.
The training is structured into two main phases:
- Phase I (August – November 2026): Approximately 500 participants engage in self-paced online modules, interactive webinars, and develop an individual community-contextualized DRR plan.
- Phase II (February – March 2027): Top-performing participants advance to specialized online workshops (for Asia and non-Pacific countries) or in-person workshops (for Pacific Island countries), featuring lectures, study tours, and discussions with regional and international experts.

Eligibility
The programme welcomes motivated individuals of any gender who meet the following criteria:
- Aged 18 years or older.
- Living in or originating from Pacific Island countries and territories, the Asia-Pacific region, or other eligible international locations.
- Passionate about climate change, community resilience, and disaster risk reduction.
- Proficient in English and computer-literate.
- Fully committed to completing all phases of the programme.
