The Australian Permanent Mission to the United Nations and International Organisations in Vienna provides a 5–6 month traineeship opportunity in Vienna, Austria. Designed for undergraduates, postgraduates, and recent graduates, the program offers first-hand experience working inside a busy diplomatic mission. Participants work under the mentorship of Australian diplomats, contributing to multilateral meetings, official visits, research, public diplomacy, and digital communication.
Two traineeships are envisaged for the 2027 intake. The position is onsite at the Australian Embassy in Vienna, operating Monday through Friday.

Eligibility
- Citizenship: Mandatory Australian citizenship.
- Right to Work: Ability to obtain an appropriate visa and right to work in Austria for the duration of the program.
- Academic Background: Preference is given to applicants who have completed at least four semesters or recently graduated in fields such as political science, international relations, international law, international security, defence studies, or science and technology.
- Relocation: Willingness to relocate to Vienna. Note that relocation is primarily self-funded (covering travel, visa, passport, accommodation, and health insurance).
- Compliance: Willingness to undergo a police check and abide by the DFAT Locally Engaged Staff Code of Conduct.
How to Apply
Applications do not require a cover letter. Instead, candidates must submit a complete package consisting of the following elements:
- A resume of no more than two pages focusing on relevant experience, education, and skills.
- A written reference from a referee who can speak to the applicant's abilities.
- An optional university letter of support.
- A completed traineeship questionnaire featuring six targeted responses of up to 150 words each covering motivation, international relations understanding, analytical skills, teamwork, problem-solving under pressure, and optional foreign languages.
