The 2027 Martingale Scholarships support talented postgraduate students wishing to pursue fully funded Master’s or PhD studies in mathematical sciences and artificial intelligence at leading research universities in the United Kingdom. Designed by the Martingale Foundation, the programme aims to assist individuals from low-socioeconomic backgrounds who possess the academic potential and ambition to succeed in postgraduate research.
Aside from covering tuition fees and research expenses, scholars receive a tax-free living-cost stipend aligned with the Living Wage Foundation. Participants also benefit from professional development, structured leadership training, university application guidance, and access to a broad academic and industry network.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet specific academic, financial, educational background, and fee status requirements to qualify:
- Academic Attainment: Candidates must have achieved, or be on track to achieve, a First or Upper-Second Class degree or equivalent in a relevant subject.
- Financial and School Background: Typically require facing financial barriers with a household income of £45,000 or under, alongside completing GCSEs or equivalent at a state-funded school (or receiving a scholarship covering at least 90% of fees at a fee-paying school).
- Fee Status: Applicants must generally qualify for Home Fee status at a Martingale partner university, which includes British or Irish nationals, individuals with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, and qualifying refugees or individuals with humanitarian protection.
- Schooling History: Generally require attending school in the UK or Ireland for at least three years between ages 11 and 18, or seven years between ages 4 and 18, with exceptions for refugees and asylum seekers.
- Eligible Subjects: Focused on mathematical sciences and artificial intelligence postgraduate courses for the 2027 intake. Note that financial mathematics and statistics are currently excluded.
How to Apply
The application process follows multiple stages, starting with a direct submission to the Martingale Foundation:
- Stage 1: Complete the online application form with academic transcripts, evidence of financial need, and two references.
- Stage 2: Shortlisted candidates are invited to an in-person interview in November 2026.
- Stage 3: Successful applicants become Martingale Qualified Candidates, receiving tailored application support.
- Stage 4: Qualified Candidates apply directly to eligible partner universities for specific Master’s or PhD courses.
- Stage 5: Final allocations and offers of Martingale-funded places are confirmed.
