Overview

The 2027 Fund Internship Program (FIP) – Economists at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) gives PhD students hands-on experience working on real-world economic research and policy questions affecting member countries. Based at IMF Headquarters in Washington, D.C., the position runs full-time for 10 to 12 weeks, starting on June 7, 2027, and concluding on August 27, 2027.

Eligibility

To qualify for the internship, candidates must satisfy specific academic, age, and language criteria:

  • Academic Requirements: Must be enrolled PhD students in macroeconomics or a related field within one to two years of completion, intend to return to their studies afterward, show strong academic performance, and possess robust analytical, quantitative, and computer skills.
  • Age Requirement: Must be under 32 years of age when the internship begins in June 2027, with exceptions only for time spent in mandatory military service.
  • Language Requirement: Must demonstrate excellent written and spoken English proficiency.
  • Exclusions: Previous participants in the Fund Internship Program are not eligible to reapply.

How to Apply

Applicants must complete the online application along with a technical questionnaire and submit supporting documentation:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume.
  • Statement of interest or cover letter explaining motivation for applying.
  • Proof of current student status and academic performance, such as a recent university transcript or an active enrollment letter with recent grades.

International candidates requiring U.S. work authorization will need a G4 visa, for which the IMF supplies supporting documentation. Note that housing is not provided by the organization.
